The great thing about the PlayStation 3 is that it not only has a growing catalogue of decent games, but can also play Blu-Ray films as well. When you consider that a stand-alone Blu-Ray player can cost a similar price to the console, it becomes an absolute no-brainer.

Some may say that the XBox 360 has many more great titles, both exclusive and multi-platform, and I would agree to an extent - but it has been out quite a bit longer, and at least Sony don’t charge you more to be able to watch high-def movies and get a wireless Internet connection!

PlayStation 3 Console (With Two Games Plus A Blu-Ray Movie) £299.99

Rhythm games like Guitar Hero and PaRappa The Rapper are two examples of how to do the genre well. Sadly, Battle Of The Bands is a good way to show how not to do it - even if it is a budget title.

Notes roll up from the bottom of the screen, and you must move the Wii Remote in time to these. Unfortunately it’s both far too easy and potentially painful (a strained wrist wouldn’t be surprising), although the track list is quite impressive.

Battle Of The Bands £4.99

It’s fair to say that if you weren’t a fan of the original Viva Pinata, then you won’t enjoy the sequel either. However, if you’ve missed out on playing it then Viva Pinata: Trouble In Paradise is much deeper and more addictive than you would think from looking at the very child-friendly graphics.

In the single player mode you need to restore order to the island by enticing specific pinatas to live in your garden, fill them with candy, and send them off to parties around the world. There’s also a new co-operative mode where you can play with friends either online or off.

Viva Pinata: Trouble In Paradise £17.49

Naruto: Rise Of A Ninja is an XBox 360 exclusive title that is specifically based on the English dubbed version of the anime series. There’s also a free download available that allows you to change the in-game voices to Japanese, if you so wish.

The single player mode is a cross between one-on-one fighting and role-playing games, and alternates between the two in the main story mode. There’s also a decent online multiplayer mode which sees you building up the stats of a character by fighting other players from around the world.

Naruto: Rise Of A Ninja £9.99

Although sales for Dead Space have been disappointing for such an excellent game, I think this is more to do with the raft of other decent titles that have been released recently - it’s always going to be difficult going up against behemoths like Gears Of War, FIFA, and Call Of Duty.

This survival horror game sees you battling with a polymorphic, virus-like, alien infestation called the "Corruption", which turns humans into grotesque alien creatures. Oh yeah, and you’re stranded on an interstellar mining ship deep into outer space…

Dead Space £29.99

Until not that long ago, the middle-sized XBox 360 package came with a 20GB hard drive - however, Microsoft must have been feeling generous as it’s now been tripled to a 60GB hard drive.

You also get a wireless controller, which is a hell of a lot easier to use than the previous XBox one was. To think that anyone thought a circular pad would be a good idea!

Amazon Video Game Christmas Sale

FaceBreaker is a boxing game that looks very much like a hybrid between the graphics of Ready 2 Rumble Boxing and the fighting style of Punch Out!! (remember that?!?).

Sadly it’s not all that great, and the fact that the AI is incredibly difficult to beat makes single player a bit of a chore. There’s no online multiplayer either, but you can play an offline version with friends.

FaceBreaker £14.99

Those gamers who, like me, would rather have something they can pick up and play straight away might be interested in NHL 2K8. I suppose it would also help if you liked ice hockey, but that actually doesn’t matter as much as you would think.

There’s a few new additions to this entry in the series, which make it more exciting than ever before. Graphics have been improved, there’s a new skating engine, authentic equipment is now included, and goalies have much better reactions.
