Cheap Games

PlayStation 3 (With Ratchet & Clank: Tools Of Destruction And SingStar) £269.99

The PlayStation 3 had a bit of a rocky start to its life – nobody appeared to want to buy it, and Sony kept dropping the ball in regards to sticking with a size (60GB and 40GB, then just 40GB). When all that nonsense was finally sorted out though, the console really started to shine.

With some good games already available, and some decent ones on the way as well, it’s well worth getting hold of. The online system is also very good – multiplayer titles are fantastic, and you can buy new games from the online store.

Empire Direct have the PlayStation 3 (with copies of Ratchet & Clank: Tools Of Destruction and SingStar) available for £269.99 – click here for more details.

Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer £9.92

I don’t mind it when games are designed to appeal to youngsters, but whenever I hear that a game based on a film is coming out I know that 9 times out of 10 it will be awful. Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer is no exception.

Ranking right down there with Iron Man in terms of badness, you would probably refused to play this if it was the only title available for the console and you had no choice – it’s that bad. However, fans of the film or comic book series may want to take a look (maybe).

If you fancy this PS3 game, click here to get it for £9.92 from Blah DVD.

SingStar £9.99

The PlayStation 3 version of SingStar is slightly different from its PS2 counterparts, in that you can now download extra songs to sing along to from the SingStore. Each additional track will cost you 99p, which is fairly reasonable actually.

There’s 30 tracks on the disc from artists such as Britney Spears, Blink 182 and The Killers – if you’re really daring, you can even share videos of your "singing" with the SingStar community. Heavens to Betsy!

Click here to bag this game for £9.99 from ShopTo – I should also point out that you’ll need to get the microphones to play this, although you can also use the ones from the PS2 SingStar titles.

There’s not too many decent racing games available for the PlayStation 3 – MotorStorm, Race Driver: Grid and Gran Turismo aside, Need For Speed: Prostreet is probably the best of the bunch.

There’s no online multiplayer mode sadly, but what you do get is the chance to tinker with a wide range of cars – you can then race these on various circuits around the world.

The Simpsons Game £4.50

Everybody loves The Simpsons – well they used to anyway, until the writers got incredibly lazy and started putting out rubbish! However, the video games based on the show have been quite awful. Be happy then that The Simpsons Game is at least half decent.

It’s essentially spoofing other famous and popular games like Call Of Duty and Grand Theft Auto, but done in the unique Simpsons fashion. Controlling each member of the family, you must work your way through the impressive-looking levels.

Instore at Comet you can pick up the PlayStation 3 version for just £4.50 – which is very, very cheap!

MotorStorm £9.95

MotorStorm was a launch title for the PlayStation 3, but still holds up as one of the best racers on the console. That’s quite a feat, when you consider the competition it’s up against.

With vehicles and environments that are fully destructible, as well as stunning scenery and real-time track deformation, you get a lot of bang for your buck. An excellent online multiplayer mode also adds an extra element of quality.

One of the best ideas for a game has to have been the Guitar Hero series – it’s absolutely nothing like playing the real thing, but it’s still incredibly fun. Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock is the newest title available.

With a whole host of great tracks to play along to (from artists like Guns ‘N Roses, Metallica, the Rolling Stones and the Sex Pistols) and a better designed guitar, this is possibly the best of the titles released so far.

Click here to get the PS3 release of Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock, with a wireless guitar, for £44.99 from HMV.

Cheap games like this are easy to recommend, as they can be enjoyed by anyone – even if you’re completely tone deaf!

Do you like dirtbikes? Do you like monster trucks? If the answer to either (or both) of these questions is yes, then you’ll probably enjoy MX Vs ATV: Untamed – these are what you race on it.

There’s many competitions to compete in and a bunch of mini-games thrown in as well, however the big selling point is that the PlayStation 3 version has an online multiplayer mode which can cater for up to 12 players at a time!

Click here to buy the PlayStation 2 version for £16.93 from Asda, or click here to get the PS3 release for £19.99 from ShopTo.

The 2K series of basketball games have been quite popular, and NBA 2K8 continues this trend by featuring re-designed players, new commentary and a brand-new Game Wrap-Up feature (where you choose the kind of post game show you want to see).

Also new is the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest where you compete against the best dunkers around – it’s also playable online, so you can prove that you’re the greatest dunker there is.

Amazon have reduced this PlayStation 3 title to the bargain price of £19.99 – for more information, click here.

FIFA 08 £15

For too long now the FIFA games have been miles behind the Pro Evolution series in terms of greatness – thank the Lord then that FIFA 08 bridges the gap quite a bit.

Although it’s still not 100% perfect, the improved controls and graphics (as well as the very good online multiplayer) make this the best FIFA title for some time.

Instore at Tesco you can pick up either the XBox 360 or PlayStation 3 version for £15 each.
