Cheap Games

I’ll be honest and say that I’m not entirely sure that Top Trumps is an ideal candidate for getting turned into a video game – I mean, it’s basically a "mine’s bigger than yours" card game!

Anyway, Top Trumps: Doctor Who takes this simple idea and combines it with the good Doctor. Would Brannigan beat Novice Hame in a cat-fight? Is the Dalek Emperor more monstrous than the Family of Blood’s scarecrow soldiers, or will the Ood beat them all? Find out by playing this!

Turning Point: Fall Of Liberty £19.99

Turning Point: Fall Of Liberty sees you playing the part of a resistance fighter in a first-person shooter than is quite different from the norm – part World War II shooter, part alternative history examination.

I say alternative history as the story is based around what would have happened if Winston Churchill had died after being run over by a taxi in 1931. Basically, we would have been up shit creek without a paddle.

The original controller that came with the PlayStation 3 had the rumble feedback removed, for reasons only known to whatever idiot decided it was a good idea at Sony. Thankfully they’ve rectified this mistake with the Sony PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 Wireless Controller.

It’s basically the same as the previous one, but here’s an interesting fact for you – did you know that the PS3 can support up to seven controllers at one time? Well you do now!

Amazon are currently selling this for £29.99 – for more information, click here.

Beating up Mario sounds like a good way to pass the time, as does pummeling Pickachu (the annoying little twerp). Thank goodness then that Super Smash Brothers: Brawl lets you do these things and a whole lot more.

Fight against your favourite Nintendo characters, as well as some special guests, in some beautiful arenas. After you’re through battering the computer, take it online and beat your friends to a virtual bloody pulp.

Kingdom Under Fire: Circle Of Doom £11.99

Why oh why do developers start messing about with things that already work perfectly well? The Kingdom Under Fire series has traditionally been action real-time strategy based – however, Kingdom Under Fire: Circle Of Doom is a hack and slash RPG. Not a good idea.

I suppose that the ability to join up with friends over XBox Live is a nice addition, but it’s really not enough to warrant a purchase. If you’re a fan of the series you may want to take a look though.

How much do I love Guitar Hero, let me count the ways… I’m not going to do that, as I’d be here all day (and I’d bore you half to death in the process) – what I will say that it’s one of the best series of games in quite some time.

The basic premise behind the game is to strum along in time to the music, just as you would with a real guitar – except that this one doesn’t have strings, but buttons instead.

Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock is the latest in the series (well technically Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is, but hey ho!) and is available for £44.71 instore at Tesco. The good news is that it comes with a wireless guitar, the better news is that this price is valid for all console releases (PlayStation 3, XBox 360 and Wii).

UPDATE: The PlayStation 2 version is also available for the same price.

Buzz! Quiz TV (With Buzzers) £32.97

The Buzz! games have been very popular on the PlayStation 2, so now it’s time for the PlayStation 3 to get a version of its own. Buzz! Quiz TV is the first to appear on the console, and what a debut it is.

With over 5,000 brand new questions to answer, as well as the ability to download extra quiz packs, this is the biggest title in the Buzz! series yet.

Click here to buy Buzz! Quiz TV, with 4 wireless buzzers, for £32.97 from Tesco – remember to enter the voucher code Freedel at the checkout to get free delivery.

Balls Of Fury £9.99

I love movie tie-in games, as they are so brilliantly made. Of course, I’m lying – generally they’re shit. I rarely use strong-ish language on this site, but it really annoys me that developers can’t make a good title out of a film.

Balls Of Fury is a ping-pong game, based on the film about ping-pong. The Wii controls at least make this somewhat interesting, even if it is incredibly average.

If you fancy this Wii title, click here to get it for £9.99 from Play.com.

This is most definitely one of those cheap games that you’d only want to get to either boost your collection, or as something to tide you over.

One of the best driving games this year has undoubtedly been Race Driver: Grid. With some of the best graphics seen yet, as well as a great racing experience, this comes very highly recommended.

Play.com have their own Race Driver: Grid – Special Edition which contains a copy of the game, a "making of" DVD, and a hardback artbook. Oh yes, and an exclusively unlockable car as well – the Aston Martin DBR9 (get it by entering the code P47203845).

Click here to buy the PlayStation 3 release, or click here for the XBox 360 version – both of which are £29.99 each.

You might think that by criticising such movie tie-in games as Iron Man and Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer, I automatically dismiss all of them as being rubbish – not true, as the Godfather and Scarface titles are pretty good.

However, Ratatouille is another very average entry in the history of the genre. The one thing it does have going for it though is that kids will love it. Hooray!

SoftUK are selling this PS2 title for £7.49 – for more information, click here.
