Cheap Games

Saints Row 2 £8.99

Far from being a sub-standard sequel, Saints Row 2 surpasses the original Saints Row in almost every way possible. Some may even argue that it’s as good as Grand Theft Auto IV, which is quite a big compliment to make.

Sadly a few technical bugs let it down somewhat (bugs and glitches have been known to make it freeze), but even this shouldn’t put you off getting this completely insane action/adventure game – a patch has since come out anyway, so these should probably disappear.

Gameplay have this XBox 360 title available for £8.99 – for more information, click here. Definitely one of those cheap games that fans of GTA, etc. should lap up.

Today marks The Hut XBox 360 Day, which can mean only one thing – bargains galore for Microsoft’s most popular product in years.

I say that, but in reality there isn’t a great deal included…

Call Of Duty: World At War £24.73
The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian £4.93
Dead Space £9.73
Frontlines: Fuel Of War £8.73
High School Musical 3: Senior Year DANCE! (With Dance Mat) £17.73
The Legend Of Spyro: Dawn Of The Dragon £12.73
Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures £9.73
Need For Speed: Undercover £8.93
Section 8 £17.73

UPDATE: This offer is back again, with one or two stand-out titles – Call Of Duty: World At War for £24.73 is great value, but Dead Space at £9.73 is even better.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin £11.95

Where the original F.E.A.R. set the benchmark for other first-person horror titles to aspire to, its sequel sadly doesn’t provide that much in the way of originality. That’s not to say that F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is a bad game though – far from it in fact.

Gamers of a nervous disposition should probably avoid this like the plague, as the sheer number of frights is liable to give them a heart attack! Don’t be put off by some average-looking graphics either, because underneath them you’ll find a very worthwhile addition to anyone’s collection.

World Snooker Championship 2007 From £4.99

Although it’s somewhat out of date now roster-wise, World Snooker Championship 2007 is still an excellent representation of the sport. 104 of the world’s best players (at the time) are available to choose from to compete in ten official tournaments, including the U.S. Open and Mosconi Cup.

Familiar commentary comes from John Virgo, Steve Davis and John Parrot as well, which helps complete the authentic experience. All you’d need is the odd streaker and someone in the crowd coughing to have as accurate a games as possible!

If you fancy the PSP version, click here to buy it for £4.99 from Play.com. The same retailer also has the XBox 360 release (click here) at the same price, or the PlayStation 3 (click here) version for £5.99.

Virtua Fighter 5 is the ninth entry in the long-running fighting series, and is a direct sequel to Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. While the original release appeared on arcades in 2006 and was then ported to the PlayStation 3 as a launch title four Europe in 2007, many consider the XBox 360 version to be the definitive one.

Not only are all of the characters and modes from the PS3 release included, but there’s also an online multiplayer option as well as the ability to update the game. Apparently Sony have shown no interest in allowing users the same benefits, even though developers believe it could be possible through a patch.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Lightsaber Duels £11.74

Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Lightsaber Duels is a Wii exclusive which takes place during the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film and selected episodes from the first season of the subsequent television series. All of your favourite characters are included, such as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, but there’s sadly no sign of R2-D2 (for shame).

The Wii Remote is used to simulate fighting with lightsabers, which has been the dream of fanboys the world over since the console was released. After completing the single player "Campaign Mode", why not battle friends in "Challenge Mode" – it’s the closest you’ll get to the real thing…

Street Fighter IV £17.99

After what seems like the longest time waiting in the history of the universe, Street Fighter IV is now out. The great news is that it’s quite possibly the best fighting game ever made – with it becoming very clear that it manages to appeal to a huge range of abilities and tastes without compromising its fidelity.

All of your favourite characters have been re-imagined for a new generation, including the original cast of Street Fighter II. Also of note are some new special moves that exceed even your wildest imagination, such as Focus Attacks, Super Combos, and the revenge-fueled Ultra Combo system.

Play.com have this PlayStation 3 title available for £17.99 – for more information, click here. This is definitely one of those cheap games you’ll be playing for some time to come (online fighting alone is worth the price of admission).

Nintendo DSi Console (With Game And Accessory Pack) £139.99

Even though the Nintendo DSi does come with some great new features, like an SD cart slot and two cameras, it’s quite irritating that the GameBoy Advance bit has been removed – this means that you can’t play GBA titles, and you also can’t use the Guitar Hero grip (which is downright stupid).

Anyway, Amazon currently have a promotion running whereby you can get a Nintendo DSi console, with a game and an accessory pack, for £139.99. The titles to choose from are pretty good to, being that they include FIFA 10, Rhythm Paradise, Advance Wars: Dark Republic and Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Republic Heroes (amongst others).

Click here to get the full details on this offer, which can be for either the white or black system.

The Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass £9.99

The Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel to the GameCube’s The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Set in a parallel world away from the main Zelda timeline, the lush cel-shaded 3D graphics and gripping story make this one of the best DS titles to own.

Although, as you’d expect, it doesn’t come close to matching The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess, this is still probably THE best adventure game on the handheld console. Multiple awards and near unanimous praise from the critics only help solidify this opinion (and when are they ever wrong?!?).
