While it's fair to say that the original was a very disappointing Western-themed first-person shooter, Call Of Juarez: Bound in Blood is completely the opposite – managing to blend fast-paced gameplay and brilliant graphics with an authentic Western feel.

Although the single-player campaign is a little on the short side and the enemy AI is often found lacking, the team-based multiplayer mode is great fun. Downloadable content is also available, extending the lifespan of the multiplayer mode by adding four new maps.

Alan Wake £24.85

After being in development for nearly ten years, there was a chance that Alan Wake could turn out to be a huge disappointment (like Too Human) – thankfully, it's ended up not only being one of the best third-person shooters of all-time but also one of the most enthralling as well.

You play as suspense-thriller Alan Wake whose wife disappears while on vacation in idyllic small-town Bright Falls. He must uncover the mystery behind her vanishing, whilst dealing with events from his latest novel coming to life before him…

Sonic Unleashed £4.99

Initial demos of Sonic Unleashed hinted at a return to traditional platforming roots, and the resulting full game doesn't disappoint. There's still some crappy 3D bits, but the 2D scenes really do feel like something from a bygone era.

What might take some getting used to is the change from speedy and exciting daytime bits to the slower night sections. Whilst it's very enjoyable during the day, the night areas are at times very boring (it's a bit too combat-heavy and lethargic, to be honest).

If you fancy the XBox 360 release, click here to buy it for £4.99 from Comet. Wii owners can click here to buy their version for the same price from the same retailer.

Sonic and the Black Knight £4.99

As the second entry in the Wii exclusive Sonic Storybook series, Sonic and the Black Knight hasn't been all that well received by reviewers – though younger gamers should enjoy the combination of Sonic's trademark speed and a new swordfighting system.

The single player mode has also been slated somewhat for its short length, but the inclusion of a multiplayer option increases the longevity quite a bit (even if you can't take part via the Nintendo network, rather annoyingly).

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 £25

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a first-person shooter that serves as a direct sequel to the popular Battlefield: Bad Company. Although it faces strong competition from others in the genre, many have claimed this to be even better than titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Set in various environments from South America and the mountainous regions along the borders of Russia, with all of the destructible capabilities returning from its predecessor, this has both an engaging single-player campaign and one of the best multiplayer modes around.

Tesco are selling this PlayStation 3 title for £25 – click here for more details. Remember to use the Tesco 15% discount before the end of July to get this for £21.25.

Wii Fit (with Wii Balance Board) £59.99

Wii Fit is an exercise game consisting of activities which make use of the Wii Balance Board, which is contained in the box. Whilst some people have complained that this is one example of Nintendo ignoring hardcore gamers, who can blame them – this has become the fifth biggest selling video game ever in record time!

Roughly 40 different activities are to be found, including yoga poses, push ups, strength, balance and aerobic exercises. Furthermore, the software can calculate your body mass index by measuring your weight and centre of balance, and can also track your "Wii Fitness Age" through a full body test (a bit like the option you'll find in Wii Sports).

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Uncaged Edition £9.95

As a rule of thumb, most video games based on movies are considered best to avoid with a ten foot pole. Thankfully this is starting to become a thing of the past, with the decent X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the Ghostbusters title (which is technically different from the films, but I'll include it anyway!).

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Uncaged Edition is different in almost every way from the other console versions. The setting is in five areas (from Africa through to the Corbeau casino) and a large amount of blood and gore is included – making for a brutal, but slightly repetitive, action game.

Click here to buy the XBox 360 release, or click here to buy the PlayStation 3 version – both of which are £9.95 each at Zavvi.
