Cheap Games

Red Steel 2 is the sequel to the somewhat disappointing Red Steel 2 – though this has turned out to be one of those cheap games that is head and shoulders above the original (which isn't too difficult, to be honest).

Played in a first-person perspective where you can alternate between shooting and sword fighting, you take on the role of The Swordsman – one of the last surviving members of the Kusagari-clan…

Click here to get the game by itself for £13.97, or click here to get Red Steel 2, with the Wii MotionPlus accessory, for £17.97 – both of which come supplied by Amazon.

Originally planned as just a Japanese exclusive, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars has been so well received that the developers have decided to localise a version for gamers in the West as well – great news, as it's probably one of the best fighters on the Wii.

14 characters from the Tatsunoko animation studio are included alongside a further 14 from different Capcom properties, such as Street Fighter and Mega Man. As with every other traditional fighting game, the gameplay consists of trying to knock out the opponent on a 2D plane.

Though there are plenty of World War II games on the market, not too many deal with the flight battles that took place. IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey does, and does it very well – with historically accurate aircraft included too, for some extra added realism.

Over 50 different missions from famous historical battles over Eastern and Western Europe are available to take part in, and intense multiplayer dogfights mean this should take quite some time to master.

Prototype is an action game set in New York City as a virus infects people and the military attempts to put an end to it. You play as shapeshifter Alex Mercer who is searching for his past – only to discover that the virus has a secret that threatens to ruin the city…

An intriguing storyline and some impressive weapons make for a very good title, but this had the sad effect of being overlooked by many gamers – it probably didn't help that Infamous was released a mere two weeks before it (the two share many similar concepts).

Whilst some people weren't exactly thrilled with Assassin's Creed, thankfully the sequel, imaginatively titled Assassin's Creed II, has proven to be much more popular – so much so that a second release of the game has just come out.

The Assassin's Creed II: Complete Edition comes with the original full game, plus the Battle of Forli and Bonfire of the Vanities downloadable content packs. Also included are three Templar Secret Locations previously only available in the Black Edition.

Vancouver 2010 £4.97

Vancouver 2010 is the official game of the 2010 Winter Olympics and features many of the events from it – though the fact we're still using the old button-bashing method seems a little bit out-of-date now.

In addition to the 14 activities, 30 different challenges spread over all of them can be unlocked. Sadly there's no sign of any kind of career mode though (something these kind of games have been crying out for).

Click here to buy the PlayStation 3 version, or click here to buy the XBox 360 release – both of which are £4.97 each at Currys.

Skate £4.93

The amazing success of Skate seemed to catch everyone off-guard, including the company that produced the game. Sales have been almost double that of Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, which goes to show that there very well could be a new king in town…

You control a custom-designed skateboarder in the fictional town of San Vanelona, and take part in various challenges and events that are to be found around the city. Instead of pushing buttons, this game gives a more realistic feel by having you use the analog sticks to launch all kinds of different stunts.

NBA Live 09 £4.93

NBA Live 09 is the 2008 installment in the NBA Live series. As with pretty much every release, this comes with a whole host of new features which help improve the game a great deal – here's hoping that they never run out of ideas!

Key amongst these new introductions are the 5-on-5 online mode, the ability to replay key games from the past, and a feature called NBA Live 365 which will keep rosters and form as up-to-date as is humanly possible.

If you fancy this XBox 360 title, click here to buy it for £4.93 from The Hut.

Dead to Rights: Retribution £13.99

Dead to Rights: Retribution marks the debut of the series on next-gen consoles, five years after the release of Dead to Rights: Reckoning on the PSP. Returning to Grant City, a boom town gone bust that is falling to the worst excesses of crime, greed and corruption, you play as vice-cop Jack Slate as he fights to expose shadowy figures that will stop at nothing to exert their deadly influence over the crumbling metropolis.

An innovative new hybrid combat system promises to get you even closer to the action than ever before, with the option to knee someone in the genitals in slow-motion being a particular highlight for me.

Click here to get this PlayStation 3 game for £13.99 from Powerplay Direct. Definitely one of those cheap games for fans of the series (probably more than anyone else, to be honest with you).

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 includes the U.S. Open, USGA Championship and USGA's Rules Of Golf tournaments for the first time, and a new "Tournament Challenge" mode that allows you to replicate famous shots and moments from the PGA Tour's history. Also of interest are the new courses that are available, including Turnberry and Oakmont.

Reviews have been as good as ever too, which is quite impressive – it's difficult to remember a time when a Tiger Woods game actually received unfavourable comments (though the experience and upgrade system in this one is a bit tiresome).

Currys are selling this XBox 360 title for £4.97 – click here for more details.
