Cheap Games

Army of Two: The 40th Day is a first-person shooter and is the sequel to Army of Two (unsurprisingly). It again focuses on two player co-operative play, employing a cover system, but you can still get involved on your lonesome with the computer acting as your partner.

Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem are combatant partners who, with the assistance of their handler Alice Murray, must fight to survive and prevail over invading forces that have engulfed Shanghai in a devastating terrorist attack.

After a long wait, made even longer by the fact that it's initial release was delayed due to the BBFC banning the first version submitted to them, Manhunt 2 was unleashed on the 31st of October 2008 – although it's probably not quite as shocking as the hype would have you believe.

Similar to the first game, you can perform "executions" in three deadly shades – Hasty (white), Violent (yellow) and Gruesome (red) – but with all of the gore and general nastiness censored. This doesn't take too much away from the game, as the story is considered by some to be better than the one in Manhunt.

With all these different guitar and band-based games available, it makes you wonder what's next – except that we now have the answer, with the release of DJ Hero. I'm still waiting for Banjo Hero, Ukulele Hero and/or Sitar Hero…

Anyway, Rock Band: The Beatles is the latest offering from the team behind the original Rock Band. This includes some of the best songs the band ever made, plus you also get to see virtual versions of all four guys as you play along – all you drummers out there can now prove that you're better than Ringo (not hard, I know).

Click here to buy the Wii version of the Rock Band: The Beatles – Limited Edition Premium Bundle, which contains the game and a full special band kit, for £49.99 from HMV. XBox 360 owners can click here to buy their release for the same price from the same retailer.

Dead Space has been touted as "Resident Evil in space", but it's much more than that – there's no real zombies, for a start! Comparisons are obvious, however, when it comes to the survival horror aspect of the game.

You play as an engineer who has been sent to discover a problem onboard a ship in deep space and fix it. Once you get there, you discover the whole crew has been killed by some kind of virus – now you must survive, and stop the virus from getting out and destroying mankind…

The Sony PSP Go (White) is the latest incarnation of the handheld system, and has 16GB of flash memory and is considerably smaller than other models – the UMD drive has gone though, so you might want to hang on to your old PSP as well as getting this one.

Because of the removal of the UMD drive, the only way that you'll be able to get games is from the PlayStation Store – while this is slightly irritating, I see this as the future of attempts to combat piracy (whether it will work well or not remains to be seen though).

If you fancy this console, click here to buy it for £189.99 from Play.com.

God of War III is the first in the action/adventure series to appear on the PlayStation 3, as well as being the fifth and final chapter of this current story arc – though Kratos will more than likely return again in the future, albeit in an altogether different tale.

Gameplay-wise not a lot has changed, with puzzles to solve and a horde of enemies to vanquish as you progress. There are some excellent new weapons though, plus it looks and sounds absolutely fantastic in high definition (as you'd expect).

Gamestation are selling this for £19.99 – click here for more details.

Both Nintendo and Sony let you compete against other gamers around the world for free, but as Microsoft love money more than life itself they feel the need to charge a subscription fee to do the same thing. This sounds harsh, until you discover that more people use XBox Live than the Sony and Nintendo networks combined.

The XBox Live 12 Month Gold Subscription does exactly what it says on the tin by giving you a year's worth of online gaming. Not only that, but you also get special offers from time to time (such as reduced XBox Live Arcade titles).

F1 2009 (with Steering Wheel) £17.99

What better way to celebrate Jenson Button winning the Formula One championship for the first time than getting in a round or three of F1 2009? With all of the drivers and courses from the season when he won present and correct, see if you can help Button do it again (or defeat him with Lewis Hamilton, if you like).

As it's based on the same game engine as the one used in the Colin McRae: DiRT series and Race Driver: Grid, you can guarantee the driving side of things is well taken care of – making for one of the best racing titles ever released.

If you fancy this, click here to buy F1 2009, with a steering wheel (on the Wii), for £17.99 from HMV. This is one of those cheap games which comes highly recommended to those who enjoy the sport or driving titles in general.

Metro 2033 £17.95

Based on the novel of the same name by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 is an action-oriented game which combines both survival horror and first-person shooter elements. Set in the shattered subway of a post-apocalyptic Moscow, the fate of mankind rests in your hands…

Whilst it's not been that much of a great seller thus far, this isn't to say that it isn't any good – far from it in fact. The single-player campaign alone is worth the price of admission, as it's one of the most enjoyable in the genre in quite some time.

Zavvi are selling this XBox 360 title for £17.95 – click here for more details.
