Virtua Tennis 3 is the fourth entry in the series, and the first to appear on next-generation consoles. As well as including the tournament and exhibition modes found in the original arcade game, the home versions contain a world tour mode and a collection of mini-games.

20 of the world’s best players are available for you to control, such as Rafael Nadal and our very own Tim Henman, but it’s a bit of a disappointment that there’s no sign of an online option (on the PlayStation 3 and PSP releases anyway, as the 360 does have one) – the upcoming Virtua Tennis 2009 will rectify this oversight.

The Pro Evolution series has been leading the way for footy games for some time now. However, increased competition from FIFA means that we are now seriously spoilt for choice.

The main difference between PES 2008: Pro Evolution Soccer and FIFA 08 is that the FIFA goalies are still a bit easy to beat. There’s really that little in it, which shows how much EA have learnt over the past few years!

With the release of WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009, fans finally get the chance to take part in an Inferno match (the first person to catch fire loses). A revamped tag team match and some new game modes help to make this a worthy addition to the series.

If you get bored of the single player mode, you can now fight against others across the world online – something which is a heck of a lot of fun, I can tell you. The added addition of downloadable content for the XBox 360 and PS3 releases mean that this should never really get old any time soon!

The Last Remnant is a role-playing game set in a fictional world that features a number of distinct humanoid races. The story revolves around "remnants", mysterious and coveted ancient artifacts of varying shapes and sizes which possess magical powers and have been the cause of several wars throughout history.

It’s difficult to know whether or not to recommend this game, as their are many pros and cons. On the positive side, there’s a brilliantly unique battle system and it’s very nice to look at – however, a rather steep learning curve may put some people off, and there are some annoying graphical issues (these may be fixed via an update in the future though).

46 different World War II planes are featured in Blazing Angels: Squadrons Of WWII, and the game allows you to use these in numerous famous events (a total of 18 missions) from the war as part of a fictional squadron.

As well as a top-notch and often exciting single player campaign, there’s also online support which allows up to 16 players to take part in head-to-head and co-operative play battles.

FIFA 08 is the 2007 incarnation of one of the most popular series’ in the gaming world. Whilst it’s very easy to say that each year only sees a few minor adjustments being made and team updates being carried out, once you start playing it becomes quite addictive – not quite Football Manager standard, but close to it.

"Be A Pro" mode makes it debut here, where you control one player (apart from a goalkeeper) throughout entire matches over the course of a few seasons. The XBox 360 version also includes co-operative online play for the first time and a collection of interactive online leagues to take part in.

Hopefully you’ll now be able to finally answer such questions as who would win in a battle to the death between Batman and Scorpion, or how well Superman and Jax match up.

The Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe: Collector’s Edition is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and comes with some extra goodies. A bonus DVD looks at the making of the game and a 16-page comic book titled "Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe: Beginnings" shows how the fight came about.
